Viewing Headers and Footers in new Word documents

T

Tomcat

I have recently found that when opening Word documents, new, existing or
templates, the headers and footers are not displayed. I have to manually
select H&Ds from the format dialogue box to bring them up, then close off
before the document appears normally on screen.

I bought a new copy of Office Pro last autumn when I purchased my new
computer, so am a little bewildered that I should encounter a software
problem such as this after only a few months' use of a fairly expensive
program.

Can anyone help me, please?
Thanks,
Tomcat

Hi, Tomcat,

Are you in Page Layout View?

It sounds like you have the White Space suppressed. Place your mouse at the
top of the page, just below the ruler, and watch for the mouse pointer to
change to arrows pointing towards each other. Then, depending on the version
you are using, single click or double-click to display the white space.

Since you purchased Office last autumn, I'd say you aren't using Office
2007. In that case, you can also access the White Space option under
Tools/Options/View if you find that method easier.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email cannot be acknowledged.

Bingo! Thanks a million Beth, I'm really grateful to you. I've been using
Office Pro for several years and am sure I heard of white space before, but
my memory's not what it was... won't forget again.

Had been having lots of probs with virus protection software - now all
sorted - and thought maybe this was an associated issue - the probs I had, I
was prepared to believe anything!

The discussion groups certainly work; it's very refreshing to find that
people are prepared to share their knowledge and expertise around. I shall
certainly use a discussion group if/when I get in trouble again in the future!

Cheers and renewed thanks,
Tomcat

Thanks for your response, Susan. No, I wasn't working in page layout, always
print layout.

However Beth Melton has hit the nail on the head reminding me about white
space!

Am grateful for your time and input, nevertheless.
Cheers,
Tomcat
