Viewing HTML Source Code

I have Ofiice 2004 for Mac. When previously creating web pages or
viewing web pages source code I could see the source code by selecting
"View HTML Source from the View menu. All of a sudden this option is
gone and I ahve no idea why. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. I
have upgraded to the lastest version of Office (Version 11.2)-- this
happened before any upgrades- I was hoping the upgrades would fix the
problem.

My, I had no idea that was possible. Thanks for the tip.

It only shows up with a web page, of course, extension .htm and .html in my
tests, so first make sure it is a real web page you're looking at. My quick
test suggest it should work with both webpages saved out of Word and created
in other programs, so I'm guessing perhaps your menus went wiggy for some
reason.

Standard fixes for missing menu items:

Make sure you didn't accidentally turn on "Word 5.1 Menus". Look under View
to see if there's a check next to that option. If that isn't the problem:

If you go to Tools | Customize Toolbars/Menus, select the Menu Bar, and
click Reset, it should set all your main menus and built-in toolbars back to
the default.

If you have customized your menus or toolbars, you may want to explore the
Tools | Customize | Customize Menus and Keyboards, Commands dialog, and drag
the commands you are missing back to the toolbars/menus yourself, rather
than wipe out your customizations by clicking Reset.

View | HTML Source is, amazingly, under exactly that in Tools | Customize
Menus and Keyboards. So you can dig it out and drag it back, I guess...not
sure how the "only shows up when applicable bit" will work with that.

Hope that helps,

IIRC, the file doesn't have to be *saved* as a web page, but you do have to
be using Web Page View for the command to show up in the menu.

I just proved myself wrong - unless the file is saved in (M)HTML ther is no
source to view... Duhhh :)

I had no idea File | Web Page Preview existed either. Then you can view the
Source in Safari or whatever--though, not edit it.

But I tried switching a regular doc to View | Online Layout and didn't get
View | HTML Source.

Am I missing something? I'm not sure how you got what you remember.

Although, actually, we forgot to point out to Tom that if you want to mess
with source code, you shouldn't be using Word to create web pages anyhow,
because Word produces horrible source code, and it's gotta be much more
difficult to edit than source code from most any other app would be. Word
should really only be used to create web pages if you don't want to deal
with their innards *at all*.

Try Nvu, free and WYSIWYG instead.

Hi Daiya -

Apparently you hadn't yet seen my reply to my own post

Sometimes it's fun to just make things up as you go along... even if you
don't realize you're doing so. I'll probably be somewhat better once they
get my medication adjusted if I can remember to forget not to take it :)

And even that may not be a good idea in the eyes of many!

PS - Glad you're back!
