Viewing Managers Overall time in Summary area

We would like to show the Project Managers time as a line item under the summary task. We know that we can have the PM's time calculated as 10% of the overall for reporting, but we would actually like to see a task with start / finish dates (of the entire summary) and then use that line to display the 10%.

Is this possible? Thanks for any thoughts - Kacie

Something like
- Summary Task 6.5 months 1-1-04 6-15-04
PM Time 6.5 days 1-1-04 6-15-04
Item A 3.25 months 1-1-04 3-12-04
Item B 3 months 3-13-04 6-15-04

you want a hammock task. This is one whose start date is linked to the start
of one task, which in this case will be a milestone (0 duration task) called
"project start", and whose finish date is linked to the finish date of
another task, in this case another milestone called project finish. you make
the link by copying the start date of the first milestone and then paste
special, link to the start of "manage project", and similar for the task
finish date.
The start milestone is set to ASAP and the finish milestone is set to ALAP,
whcih should propel it to the end of the project.
The "manage project" task will span the entire project and its start and
finish dates will stay glued to the start and finish dates of the project
even if they change (which they will) and then you can assign the PM to it
at any % assignment units you like.
No doubt several people will jump in here with suggestions about better ways
to do this and reasons why ALAP is dicey (it is), rather than simply linking
the finish milestone FS to the task at the end of the critical path. stand
by.

Hi Kacie,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I think a hammock task will suffice: please see FAQ Item: 19. Hammock Tasks

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Thanks so very much. We had tried the hammock approach but without the ALAP. It worked for me but my staff tells me that the dates constantly move (my response - yah, aren't they suppose to?) and I thought there might be a better way. It could be the ALAP is the solution. THANKS for the help and support!
