I recently upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007. The upgrade went fairly
smoothly, although some old Archive files seemed to get in the way. Once
that issue cleared, I noticed a subtle change in Outlook 2007 and the way it
displays new messages.
In the left pane (Navigation) the INBOX folder always shows the number of
'new' messages it has received from both of my POP3 accounts. In the right
pane (Viewing), the new message subjects do NOT automatically display unless
I use either workaround as follows:
a. Click on any other folder and again click on the INBOX folder,
b. Right-click on the INBOX folder and select SHOW INBOX
Outlook 2003 always updated the Subject(s) in the viewing pane for all
messages (both old and new) as the messages were received.
I checked the Knowledge Base and found a reference to a similar problem
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839226/en-us). But, KB839226 describes a
condition whereby new messages would not be shown at all. This alludes to a
UDP port problem. This is not the case here. All new messages ARE being
downloaded and are being shown in the left navigation pane.
It is unusual since the INBOX viewing pane will become 'partially' updated
with new subjects over time. (I automatically query two POP3 accounts for
new messages every 10 minutes) Not all new subjects will be displayed in the
viewing pane, even though the navigation pane shows a 'new message count'
which is larger than the new message subjects in the viewing pane. I have
yet to determine the conditions which allow some new messages to be displayed
in the viewing pane.
Am I missing a simple 'setting' within Outlook 2007?
