Viewing tasks

I appear to finally have MS Project Server up and running. I have only
created 1 user however and assigned them to a group and set the permissions
(it is just the default Admin windows account I am using). I am running
everything on 1 machine and trying to get a feel for MS Project Server to see
if its what my team needs. I built a team, adding my Admin account name to
the list of the already existing team members that I had manually entered in
the project file before making the server.

I have saved and published a team schedule on the server and am able to see
it. I also have the Outlook add in downloaded.

What I am trying to do:
Make it so that I (on my admin account), can download and view all tasks and
occurances from the project file in my outlook. Do I have to assign my
resource to every single task item or is there an easier way to do this?
Also, I am confused as to how I even assign my resource in the file. I still
am only able to pull up the names of the workers I had input manually into
the file.

Also: What tasks is my outlook looking for? Is it associated with my
windows account and looking for tasks that have that particular resource
allocated to it?

Thanks

Hi T,

The tasks that are shown on the my task page, and those imported into
Outlook, are the tasks associated with the My Tasks category. By default
these are the tasks to which you have an assignment, therefore you will not
be able to see all the tasks in a project in Outlook unless you are assigned
to them all.

In terms of resources, these should be Enterprise resources (it sounds like
you have typed in "local" resources). you can assign enterprise resources to
tasks by hitting Tools | build team from enterprise in Project Pro.
Enterprise resources should be associated with a Windows account (though you
can use forms authentication to associate with another directory source (LDAP
etc)).

Ben,

Thanks for your feedback. Looks like I can't do what I want to with the
setup I have. I am just trying to put together a demo for my boss right now
and using a laptop that is not synched with our ActiveDirectory server. Once
that is done (in theory), I should then be able to add the enterprise
resources by pulling them from our address book correct?

Also, is there a way for project server to actually send out the
requests/event reminders via e-mail vs. having to connect with microsoft
project and using the outlook/microsoft project add-in?

Thanks again!

T,

Microsoft has put together three demo virtual machines, one of which might
achieve what you're looking for without all the hair-pulling you're having
to go through building your own. While they're typically available only
to Partners you might prevail upon a local partner or Microsoft to get you
a copy.

Last-choice-alternative: Become a Registered Partner yourself (it only has
to be you, it's free, it's all online and fast) and download the demo
virtual machines from the partner site yourself from
https://partner.microsoft.com/US/salesmarketingsection/smsalesdemos/sdproductdemos...;-)

Thanks for the information. I found out that we are signed up but our
subscription is expired. I went ahead and signed us up again and it looks
like the download that has virtual machines requires us to be "certified
members". Seems like a hassle in my opinion.

There are two sets of virtual machines available: the Demo Showcase
(Certified and Gold partners only); and the Product Demos (open to all
partners including Registered). You want the latter, which contains all
three Project Server Product Demos (Capital Planning and Investment
Control Solution demo, EPM demo, and something they call Innovation
Process Management Solution demo).

While the Demo Showcase can be ordered as DVD's the Product Demos must be
downloaded .RAR-by-.RAR then combined to remake the virtual machine. The
..EXE in each demo takes care of the rebuild.

From the main Partner Program site, Login, then click on the Sales &
Marketing tab. On the left nav bar, expand the Sales Demo item and select
the Product Demos item. You'll find all three Project Server demos there.

Cheers!
