viewing word 2000

Program has been working ok. I use a dell Latitude which
also currently experiencing display problems in colours
and screen size.
In word 2000, use of space bar or entry key creates black
strip across whole width - edge to edge of documents.
Applies to new as well as existing files. Screen appears
normal at opening, when words etc entered, they go into
these black blocks. Copy is there, but as though it's
covered.
help!
