Views in 2003 Pro

I created a new view via the View - More Views - Copy command and renamed the
new view. Even though I have two distinct views listed on the sidebar menu,
they seem to be the same view. That is, if I edit one, the other reflects
any changes made. How do I de-link these or create a new separate view based
on an existing view?

Hi Chicago2Paris,

It sounds as though you may be altering the table, which is part of the
view. Are you adding columns (fields) or deleting columns? If so, you are
changing the table and the table is part of several views. Try starting with
View > Tables, More Tables and then creating a new table by copying the
existing table. Then go back and redefine your view to refer to the new
table.

I hope this helps.

Hi Julie,

I'm deleting some columns and adding new customized fields columns, so I'm
doing both. Isn't a view just a representation of a table (data)? I'm
confused as to the definitions of these two entities now. I'd be surprised
that by changing a view I'm actually altering the data layout of a table.
Thanks.

Views are usually be made up of tables plus a graphic -- for example the
Gantt chart graphic which combined with the Task Sheet is the Gantt chart
view. The Task sheet has tables applied which are the columns (fields)
showing the data. When you alter a table by inserting and deleting columns
any view that uses that table in its definition will also be changed.

So, for example, if you make a copy of the standard Gantt chart view -- that
view is actually made up of the Task Sheet (left) with the Entry table and
then the Gantt graphic. If you alter the Entry table in the new view, it
will also alter the look of the standard Gantt chart view because it also
uses the Entry table.

I hope this helps.
