Virus or Glitch?

Jon

The following problem is wasting a lot of time, reminiscent of Shirley
Conran quip (a UK celebrity housewife some years ago) "Life's too
short to stuff a mushroom". Computer presently much the same, in
generating interminable, unrewarding attention ...

Have Entourage part of Microsoft Office on Mac G4 running OX 10 latest
10.4 version, . Have run it successfully for several years.

Programme has recently flipped when sending new messages.

Previously, when name of recipient typed in, list of matching
addresses shown in box below, changing to closer match as name
continues to be typed in.

Now, when name of recipient typed in, full email name not shown, and
thin yellow panel shown below, only showing one letter and 3 dots
(thus - T...)

Three possibilities:
- I've accidently triggered a display option I don't want;
- An entourage file has been corrupted somewhere in system;
- There is a virus tampering with email transmission.

I've de-installed Office and re-installed with latest updates, and re-
installed Mac System software, which has made no difference

Anyone had anything similar? Any solutions?

Thanks,

John.

Hi Jon (John?)!

First, folks love to suspect viruses for strange happenings on their
computer but you're giving viruses too much credit. Most problems are
simply caused by flaws in programming or conflicts with other processes
on your machine.

I suspect what you're seeing is the yellow tooltip that says "Type name
or address here". Why it's getting truncated I'm not sure but I'm going
to suspect a font cache problem. (I blame fonts for many more problems
than viruses.)

If you have something like Cocktail
<http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php> or Font Finagler
<http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/> then run it to clean
your font caches and restart your computer.

Hope this helps!

Well, I don't know about the first two, but there are *NO* OS X
viruses...never have been.

But there are MS Office viruses (and a couple of Java viruses) that affect
both Mac and Windows.

I agree with Bill, however, that a font problem is a lot more likely than a
virus or malware problem.

I don;t see how any of them could affect Entourage though since
NEtourage doesn't have any support for Visual Basic (VB is what's used
to write the macro viruses in Word or Excel documents),
