Virus scan on launch

Tom

I am running Microsoft Office Word 2003 SP1 on Windows XP SP2. Whenever I
launch Word by double clicking on a .doc file, the message "running virus
scan" appears in the bottom line of the Word window. At times this would
cause Word to lock up. The only way to get out was with Task Manager. The
problem was intermittent and not necessarily repeatable with specific files.

It was suggested that the problem was due to competing virus scanners. It
seemed to go away when I disabled the Norton Utilities that came bundled
with the computer.

I am using RoboHelp for Word X5.0.1 with a large project that involves
several large Word files. When I try to produce printed documentation the
processing requires opening and closing of several Word files and the final
output is a Word file. RoboHelp frequently stops with no error messages -
just a note saying that the .doc file failed to print.

I am experiencing no other problems with RoboHelp. I believe that the
problem is due to RoboHelp being unable to open and close the Word files
while it is scanning for viruses.

How do I disable the Word's running a virus scan on launch? I have Macro
Security level to low. This reduced the frequency of the Word-RoboHelp
problems but did no eliminate them.

Word does not have a virus scanner built in. You should not
completely disable Norton Antivirus, unless you are running a
different antivirus program instead. Instead, disable the Office
Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more
information.

This could have been easy if you were using Norton or McAfee. There is no
way we can stop this from word. Because this is not a functionality of Word.

For Norton it is officeav.dll and McAfee it is MsScan32.dll. This files
when renamed the virus scanning is disabled. You will have to search for a
similar file in your antivirus.
