virus scan

When I open up a document with Excel or word for that
matter it automatically sends a request for a virus scan
which takes an unacceptabley long time. We are using
Norton Systemworks and there does not seem to be a way of
switching this off from Norton. In fact it does say in
Excel help that if virus scanning software is present it
will automatically generate this request. The only way
that I found to solve this probelm is to uninstall Norton
Antivirus (even temporarily disabling it does not work).
The problem with this is that we lose email scanning
which makes us nervous. Anyone know a solution

I have applied the workaround suggested in the post re MS
Office XP Pro and it has restored the speed to a (just)
acceptable level but I would like to find away to avoid
excel and word automatically requesting a virus scan
