Virus Scanner & Office

Gummo

I've noticed that it is taking longer to open any Office document and the
message 'Running virus scan' appears at the status bar.

I'm running Office 2003 and AVG. Any ideas on how to turn off the scanner?

This is not an Office question but since I also use AVG...........Go into
the Control Panel and change the settings in your Resident Shield.

Is it not an Office question since the anti-virus message appears on Office
windows? I've unchecked 'Scan Documents' in the Resident Shield to no
avail.

I still think it's an AVG issue. You may have to play with the settings.
I'm running an older system and if anyone would have issues like that, I
would think I would - but thank heavens I don't.

Just curious - are you using AVG v7?

I can't think of what settings I can change to fix this.

I have version 7.0.308 of AVG.

As for your situation, under AVG's Resident Shield properties,
which options are selected?

FWIW, I'm using the same version of AVG as the OP, my settings in AVG's
resident shield are:

Scan Floppy drives, Scan Program Files, Scan Documents, Scan Email
Files and Use Heuristic Analysis are checked, On-close Scanning, Scan
all files and Turn off scanning files without extension are NOT
checked. I believe this is the default setup of AVG?

Anyway, I also have Office 2003 and do not have the problem the OP has.

So, this probably won't help any but I noticed the similarity of my
setup and the OPs and thought I'd mention it. If the OP's settings are
different, maybe mine would help, if they're the same, I have no
suggestions.

Same as mine as well. Ditto for Office 2003.

Okay Gummo - we're waiting to hear from you now.

Hi Gummo,

It's been awhile since I had AVG installed
but usually the message you're seeing only
happens with Antivirus programs that grab
specific 'hooks' in MS Office to integrate
their virus checking. The main one that does
so was the OfficeAV.DLL plug-in from Norton
Antivirus.

Any chance that Norton was/is also on that machine?

Nothing from Norton (no relation) on any machine I've ever had. On
very close inspection I can see a VERY brief message from AVG so......

Hey, Gummo, do me a favor... forget AVG and Office and let's clean up
your machine and see what happens, try emptying the cache on Internet
Explorer, delete cookies and history, empty AVGs virus vault if it's
not already and defrag your harddrive. Maybe your machine has just
become slow and the problem isn't either AVG or Office? Give it a
shot.

Hello Bob

I haven't had Norton on my machine since 2001; indeed, I've reformatted
several times since.

I've just noticed that in Tools/Options/Security/Macro Security/Trusted
Publishers, a certificate from Symantec Corporation is present. 'Trust all
installed add-ins and templates' is checked and 'Virus scanner(s) installed'
is displayed.

I've done all that David - no change, but don't forget - the delay contains
the 'Running virus scan...' message, so something's handshaking with Office.

I'll try opening a larger file but I don't know if I have one archived
anywhere, it'll take me a while to find something, maybe a day or two.

Thanks David.

I get that too but it's only for a second, I have to look very quickly
in order to see it. Probably if I were opening a larger file it would
appear longer?

OK, if I open AVG, right click on Resident Shield, de-select Scan
Documents, it doesn't do it but AVG is not happy....

Disable the "scan documents" and see if that is what's causing the
delay. At least we'll know if it's AVG or something else...

Hi Gummo,

Interesting. If you search the computer is
OfficeAV.DLL still there?
