Visio 2000 upgrade problem

I own a retail upgrade of Visio 2000 standard and a valid qualifying product,
Visio 4 standard. However despite Visio 4 being installed on my system the
Visio 2000 upgrade installer won't see it. Rather than providing the usual
'Browse' option to find a valid installation or CD it asks for the serial
number of the qualifying Visio program. Visio 4, although a valid qualifying
product, does not have a serial number, so I'm stuck.

An internet search shows this to be a common problem (apparently Windows XP
related) but the only solution I've found is to obtain a 'fake' serial number
to continue with the upgrade. I can't find anything relavent in the Microsoft
Knowledge base.

Unfortunately my attempts to obtain one from Microsoft Customer Support (UK)
have been fruitless. The lady on the phone insisted on my giving her a 25
digit Microsoft product code for Visio 4 (which of course it doesn't have -
it's not a Microsoft product). After some time I managed to convince her that
there wasn't one at which point she kept asking for a the Microsoft part (I
think) number on the CD (apparently it starts with an X), it doesn't have one
either. At this point she said that it wasn't a supported product and ended
the call.

Any thoughts/solutions on where to go from here? I have a retail Visio 2003
upgrade too for which the uninstallable Visio 2000 is the qualifying product!

Had another chat with someone at Microsoft support who, after checking things
out, happily gave me a new product code to install the Visio 2000 upgrade
without the need to check a previous Visio serial number. They even emailed a
copy on to me.

I also had great help from Microsoft Licensing saying that, as long as I
held qualifying software for the Visio 2000 upgrade (which I do) I could
install Visio 2003 upgrade from the 2000 upgdrade and be correctly licensed.

Great help all round from Microsoft, I'm very impressed.
