Visio 2003 - Max file size and/or corruption

R

Rachel

Hello,
Over the last 5 months I have been working on a Visio document that is
almost 18,000KB. As I update it, I save it with a different date at the end.
Recently, when I make changes and go to save the changes I receive a
Runtime error. It says the application has requested the Runtime to
terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact..... I have had corrupt
Visio files before and this was not the error I received.... Does anyone know
if my file is too big? What the problem could be? How I can fix this? I
can work with other (smaller) Visio files fine, so I dont think it is the
software.

Hey Rachel,

well i have 50 MB Visio files with no problems working with them - so the
size shouldnt be the issue. The question is:
- Why does the file get that big at all
- Did you clean the file of unused shapes and mastershapesa ?

There is not much you can do to "prevent" this - but i would suggest also an
update of the display driver if possible - i had thse errors often with an
old driver.

Hi Senaj,
Thanks for your response. I'm glad to know that size isnt the issue. The
file has 300+ tabs and each has color throughout (shapes, swimlanes, etc).
Where can I get an updated display driver?

It could be that you are running out of internal memory. How much
memory do you have on this computer. Do you have another computer with
Visio installed with more memory?

I don't have another computer to use. Would it help if I deleted old Visio
files I no longer need?

No, that won't help. If it's a shortage of memory then you could text
this by temporarily closing all unwanted applications (virus checker,
firewall (with suitable precautions), and any other stuff that loads
itself on startup.
You could try the Visio cleanup utility but I don't know if that is
still available.
Also, check that markup tracking isn't enabled, that can make the file
bigger than it should be.
