Visio 2003 Pro Customization Doesn't stick

B

Bruce Johnson

Visio 2003 Pro SP1 (and prior to SP1). I customize the toolbar with Format
Shape > Define Styles... and Format Shape > Style (the style selector).
Lasts for the session, at least.

Then, after exit all and restart Visio, even opening the same .vsd, tend to
loose the customization and have to re-do it. Seems like a crap shoot, about
30% of the time the customization sticks, the other times it doesn't.

These are custom pages, not from a built-in template, that is, File > New
blank, then add shape stencils.

There is a bug in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 that causes this problem in Visio. I'm
not sure whether Adobe has published any fix.

Ok, I can live with that; better that than some obscure thing or setting
buried somewhere.

Hi,

CAUSE:
=======
When Visio restart after customizing tool bar, an add-on used by Adobe
Acrobat to
put its tool bar and menu in Visio 2003, resets the Visio toolbars to
default setting.

RESOLUTION 1:
==============
1. From the tools Menu > Options, Advanced Tab, Select Put all settings in
the
Windows Registry

If you have Adobe Acrobat Professional installed on your computer, and the
customization of the toolbar does not stay, then
To resolve the issue, Follow these steps:
Close Visio if running
1. From the Control Panel, Open Add or Remove Programs
2. Select Adobe Acrobat Professional, Change button
3. In the Adobe Acrobat Setup wizard, Click on Next
4. Select Modify and Click on Next
5. Expand Create Adobe PDF > Expand Create Adobe PDFMaker > Click on
Microsoft
Visio and in the menu that drops down, Select This feature will not be
available
6. Click on Next and Click on Update
7. Next click on Finish to finish the settings
8. Restart Visio, Customize a toolbar, close Visio and re-launch Visio

The customization is still there.

Note: The documents can still be printed to an Adobe PDF file from the File
Menu >
Print > Select Adobe PDF from the printer driver

RESOLUTION 2:
==============
To resolve the issue, delete "pdfmvisio.vsl", it is an Adobe Acrobat add-on
for
Visio to display Acrobat toolbar and menu items.

Steps:
1. Search for "pdfmvisio.vsl"
2. Rename or move the file to some other locations.
3. Launch Visio 2003. You may get a error message, like "unable to load
Adobe
Acrobat add-on". Click OK to continue.
4. To avoid this error message, re-install Visio.

RESOLUTION 3: (This applies to Visio 2002 only)
===========================================
Adobe PDF maker installs a .vsl file or a .dll file in the startup folder

Steps:
1. Check for the existence of a .vsl or a .dll file in the "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10\1033\startup" directory
2. Found the .dll for the PDF maker which was moved on to another directory
3. Started Visio and checked for the PDF maker toolbar
4. Created a new custom toolbar, exit Visio and restarted

Thanks and regards,
