Microsoft has released Service Pack 3 for the Visio 2003 product. You can download the pack here:

(If English is not your install language, you can change to another one on the web page.)

Contents
The set of changes is described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938794/

The majority of the changes in this release are security and reliability related as Visio 2003 gets much of the same hardening that has gone into more recent versions. There are also a number compatibility fixes to help Visio 2003 work with newer products such as IE7, Vista, SQL 2005 and even Visio 2007.

In particular the hyperlink problem with IE7 as described in this article has been corrected.

This update also applies to those running Visio for Enterprise Architects in Visual Studio 2005. A number of fixes have been made to the Software / Database functionality that resides in Visio Professional as well as VEA.

And finally no update to Visio 2003 would be complete without addressing a printing problem. Visio 2003 has had more than its fair share of printing issues. SP3 fixes a problem with very long plotter pages.

This is a beefy download at 48MB but definitely recommended.

Mark -

After installing SP3, I am no longer able to open complex drawings created
with an earlier version of visio.

"An error (124) occurred during the action Open File" "This file contains
too many objects to convert back to the earlier format. Please simplify it
and try again."

These drawings can be opened normally from visio 2003 SP2, or visio 2007.
I have been a visio user for many years (before it was a microsoft product),
and have a large collection of drawings. After reverting back to SP2
(that is re-installing), then saving file in latest file format, then
re-installing SP3, the file opens correctly. ....obviously not a desirable
approach.

I briefly considered attempting to convert all old files, but wasn't able to
readily identify what format the file was saved in.

any help or suggestions here would be appreciated.
thanks,
greg.s

Hi Greg,

Feel free to send me the drawing or drawings in question. Just remove
"online" from my e-mail address.

Hello Mark -

I forwarded an example of a 'problem file' as requested. The error message
below is generated when attempting to open the file with visio 2003 SP3, and
opens normally under SP2.

I do have to correct one statement in the earlier post below however:
compatibility with visio 2007 was not verified as previously thought. The PC
in use at that time had Office suite 2007 but still visio 2003 SP2.

regards,
greg.s
