Visio 2003, SP2, crash on exit - Vista Ultimate

T

I've got a new Thinkpad T60, Windows Vista Ultimate. I've got Visio 2003 SP2
installed, and it runs just fine. I can create new docs, open old, use it
just fine, except for one thing. Every time I exit the program, by any method
(click close window "X", hitting ALT-F4, etc.) - Visio crashes.

I get the standard Vista crashed dialog, offering to either Check online for
a solution and close the program, or Close the program. Clicking "check
online" does nothing that I can tell; the dialog closes, and nothing else
happens. Clicking "close the program" does just that.

I can go right back into Visio, use it again, but then it will crash, each
time I exit.

Currently downloading SP2, think I might try the old uninstall/reinstall and
re-up SP2 route. I also have Office 2007 installed, if that matters.

I also have Microsoft Update running, doing its automatic updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There should not be a problem with running Visio 2003 alongside Office
2007. It sounds like something specific in your environment. Can you
provide more details about the crash itself? Specifically I want to know
what the Bucket ID for the event is. (Hopefully you sent the report in
when the events occurred?)

In Vista, try these steps:
1. Click on the Start button, and type "wercon" in the Start Search box
(without the quotes), to launch the Problem Reports and Solutions panel.
2. On the left, select View Problem History to see recent events.
3. Locate one of the Visio 'Stopped Working' events and double click on it
to see the details.
4. Locate the Bucket ID.
I can try to locate more info on the crash using this Bucket ID.

By the way - We've seen some issues in Visio 2007 with COM add-ins that
don't unload nicely. It's possible that you have something like this
happening with a Visio 2003 add-in. Check to see if you have any COM
add-ins in Visio 2003:
1. Open Visio, open the Tools menu, select Macros, COM add-ins.
2. If there are installed add-ins, they will be listed here You can try
changing the Load behavior, or simply remove them if you desire.

Let me know if that helps you at all. If it does - I'd be interested in
learing what specific add-in(s) you found and disabled.

I checked the COM add-ins, only thing listed was MapPoint Office Add-In.
Tried disabling that, restarting Visio, still crashed on exit. Checked
MapPoint, it works just fine, but I hadn't actually run it, yet - relatively
new system - so I Accepted the EULA for it, and it ran fine.

Got back into Visio, still crashing on exit. Thanks for your help.

One thing that I noticed is that the problem report Status is "Not
Reported" - it's always helpful for us to get these problem reports, so if
you are able to (internet connected, corporate policies permit it, etc.)
report them, we all gain from the knowledge. In this case, I can see tsome
other reports that have similar characteristics, but none have been nailed
down yet as to a known cause.

My suggestion is to try a few things to repair the install status of your
Visio and Mappoint bits first. You can generally launch the maintenance
mode from the Control Panel list of installed applications. First - close
all applications on the system. Then open the Control panel list of
applications, and highlight Visio, select Change, and follow the prompts to
Repair. Then follow the same process for Mappoint. After these complete
launch Visio and Activate it (it will probably respond that you have
already activated). Then create a test drawing and exit Visio - see what
happens. If you see the same issue - Send the report to Microsoft. (No
personal information is included in these reports)

If that does not help, then the next step would be to uninstall the
Mappoint addin. If necessary, you may need to remove it first, using the
manage COM Addins dialog in Visio. Then test Visio again, and see if you
are able to close the program without the error.

If neither of those helps, then you can follow your plan of removing Visio
completely, and re-installing (including re-applying SP2). I would suggest
that you remove Mappoint at the same time, and reinstall incrementally to
see where things go wrong (if they do). You should consider contacting
technical support if more intensive troubleshooting is needed. You can

Thanks very much for your post & suggestions, I'll try the Repair route
first, then move on to Uninstall/Reinstall if that doesn't work.

As for the status of the report, 90% of the time, I do submit the problem
online and check for a solution, but as I get no feedback from clicking that
option from *this* problem, I've stopped doing that.

With other Vista issues, I've gotten a suggestion to download an updated
device driver, or hit the manufacturer's website to check for an app update,
but with this particular issue, when I click on the link to submit the
problem online, the dialog simply goes away...

Thanks.

I have the exact same problem - without using Mappoint. Did reloading
help out?

Same problem as mentioned. Appcrash error message. As suggested, deselecting "Enable COM add-ins" resolved the issue. (Visio Tools->Options/Security)

Thanks for the tip
