Visio 2003

Schmozzy

We have a drawing that was created in Visio 5.0. When we
open it in Visio 2000 it looks normal. When we open it in
Visio 2003 the drawing is truncated. This happens if we
save the drawing in Visio 2000 and then open it with Visio
2003.
I would be greatful for any direction you could offer.
Thanks

Hello Schmozzy,

In order to further troubleshoot the issue, I need the following information:

1. What is the exact edition information about Visio 5.0?
2. What is the type of the drawing?
3. Is it happening for all the files or only certain files?

I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

Regards,
Jagadeesh Parameswaran,

Weary Office 2003 User

Jagadeesh, this is not an unusual problem. We had
original .vsd files created in 2000 that went major ugly
when we upgraded and spent valuable hours cleaning up;
concensus was we should have just re-created.

Of note, the files that had the most problems were created
using cross-functional template in 2000, but was not
limited to this template. Even a very simple org chart
template created file had major issues because 2003
decided to throw some new features into the mix which
created havoc; colors left the building and "title" lines
previously removed reappeared, so we basically had to
reformat that one in its entirety.

We discovered a work-around that was much quicker but not
the ultimate solution: don't allow visio to convert from
2000 to 2003! You can fix alignment problems and
although "certain features" within 2003 aren't available,
we'll do fine with the 2000 features for our old files.
We can still save, just have to remember to not let it
convert when we reopen.

Also note, drawings based the cause and effect template
(aka fish bone) from 2000 are trash; quicker and easier to
build a new one in 2003.

Maybe you could check into the printing problems so many
of us are having when we place visio drawings in word/ole
problems arising from the removal of photo editor
(documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
832508). The suggested work-around won't work for most
due to licensing issues.
