Visio 2007 + Error #3400

Janet

Hello,

On Visio 2007 I receive the following error:

Visio internal error #3400
Action 1283: Open File
First try closing and reopening the file. Next try restarting Vision

I have tried the above along with several of the solutions from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826418
We have the files located on a network drive and the only way I can get the
visio drawings to open is to copy the documents locally. We do not have any
internal network issues and we run a Microsoft Network. We have Visio
2007 installed on two computers one desktop (intel motherboard & chip) and a
laptop. The laptop doesn't seem to have an issue with retrieving the files,
however, this individual copies everything locally to her computer to make
available off-line. I've tried this on the desktop (making the folder
available offline) but this does not work.

Would anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you could provide

I'm glad you found article 826418, although it is focused on issues with
specific files that may be corrupted. In your case it sounds like the
files themselves are in good condition, since you can open them once copied
locally.

Here are some thoughts / areas to explore:

- Are the remote drawings stored in a network share folder, or in a
document library on a web server running something like Windows Sharepoint
Services?

- What permissions do you have to the remote location? What OS on your
computer and on the remote server?

- What method are you using to open the files? (File > Open in Visio,
double-click file from Explorer, etc.)

- Were the drawings in question created in Visio 2007 or in previous
versions?

- How large are the drawings? If they are pretty big (over 1MB), can you
create a small sample on the network location and try to open as comparison?

- Does the same issue occur with files you have created and uploaded and
with files from other users?

Hi Barb,

The drawings are on a Private Network folder with appropriate permissions
for individuals who require access. (two individuals currently)

We have been updating to Server 2003 but this particular server is 2000.
The operating system locally is XP. The computer that was receiving the
errors was imaged within the previous week and Visio was reinstalled.

We were double clicking to open the files, however, that is when we were
getting the error from the program. I could open them locally with no
problem so this led me to believe that it was a permission problem on the
folder. One of the individuals had made the folder available offline (I'm
against this as it is a bad practice, but I'm a pee-on so my recommendations
are not always valued) I suspected that either the file or folder was
corrupted on synchronization.

As it turned out it was the individual's profile that was corrupted. It was
very strange that this person's profile was corrupt because it is a computer
assigned only to that individual, and it is the other folder member that does
the "make available offline". When I recreated the profile, we could open
the drawings without incident. I'm still boggled as to why on only this
program we were seeing errors and not on other programs - normally with a
corrupt profile I do not see it loading properly and several programs will
not function properly.

So solution was found. But thank you very much for trying to assist. It's
greatly appreciated.

I'm glad you found a solution, and agree that the profile angle is a bit
unusual - since we no longer create a Visio 'ini' file as we did with older
version of Visio.

At any rate - it is great to know all is working as expected now. Thanks
for the follow-up :)
