Visio 2007 Pro - Loss of data link

We're using Visio 2007 Professional to do processs mapping, importing the
data from Excel. We have found that large maps lose their link to the
external data when Visio is closed., while smaller maps retain the link. In
both cases, the Excel worksheets reside in the same directory as the Visio
drawings, and the Excel filenames do not change.

Is there a threshold or level of complexity beyond which the link is lost,
or is there some other cause?

I would look for some other cause. Visio can handle thousands of linked
shapes. One possibility is that you went into Remove Hidden Information and
cleared the cached external data.

Thanks for your response. No, I'm just closing the Visio file, and when I
reopen it, the links are gone. This is a file I received from someone else,
and I'll have to explore other possibilities. I just wanted to find out up
front whether there were any known size issues. I'll post back when / if I
find some other likely cause.

Thanks again,

Julian

Further research and experimentation suggests the problem is with the Excel
file, and not with Visio. The Excel file is a copy of a copy of a copy . . .
this was done to reuse the same heading templates, and I suspect there is a
setting or glitch in the "orginal" Excel file that is causing the link to be
dropped. When I start with a clean Excel file and copy the existing data into
it, I have never had a loss of data linking. Thanks again for your
suggestions.

Regards,

Julian
