Visio 4.0

I have Visio 4.0 which I am trying to install on my new Vista computer. It
does not seems to work.

1. Is Vista 4.0 compatible with Vista?
2. If not, what version upgrade should I buy?

I use Visio very very infrequently and do not want to spend much.

Visio 4.0 is not compatible with Vista. Visio 2003 probably would work
fine, but it may be hard to find since Visio 2007 is the latest version.

A few years back I was able to install Visio 1 on Windows XP, but I am not
sure about Vista.

One workaround is to install VPC (Virtual PC), a free download from
Microsoft, and create a virtual machine using one of the older versions of
Visio. Then install Visio 4 on that.

You need a legitimate copy of Windows, but if you have upgraded to a Vista
machine, you should have the OS from the previous machine.

I use VPC to test Visio and Word solutions in Office 2003 and 2007. The big
advantage is that the testing is isolated, but I can still cut and paste
between the virtual machines.

If very very infrequently use Visio that leads me to believe you may not
even need it, depending on what your reason for using it is. Many Office
applications like Word; Excel; and PowerPoint; especially with new shape
effects in Office 2007, have diagramming tools similar to Visio, but don't
have the shape/stencils/templates/add-ons that Visio has.

If you get Visio files but don't need to edit them you can view or print
them with Visio Viewer that's a free download on
http://download.microsoft.com.

I am pretty sure it will not be compatible with Vista. Why not go with the
trial version of Visio 2007. You can use it and determine if it meets your
needs if not then as Aaron suggested download Visio 2007 viewer.
