Visio 4 and Windows XP

In compatibility mode. Rob Fahrni has reported that he ran Visio 2 under
Windows XP.

Compatibility mode is quite unnecessary. I have Pre-MS Visio Technical 4.1
running flawlessly on WinXP Prof, alongside MS Visio 2000 (MS Visio 2002 was
also there but I ripped it out as agricultural crap - very disappointed with
it - wasted money on that crap didn't I?).

A client requires line diagrams in GIF file format for printing (yes - I
told them that GIF is for screen not print, but they are being advised by an
MSCSE geeky nerd who can't conceive of anything off-screen)

After hours of research (using the same original Visio VSD file) I have
established the best GIF output for printing (still yuk!) is achieved from
Visio 4.1 running on a Win98SE machine - copy/paste into Paint Shop Pro -
saved as GIF.

The same software mix & procedure (Visio 4.1 -> PSP5 -> GIF) on a Win XP
Prof machine OR Visio 2000 -> PSP5 (or 8) on the Win XP Prof machine
produces distinctly inferior results. And of course Win XP Prof refuses to
render symbol characters in any graphics format.

The "Save as" GIF filter in MS Visio 2000 is lousy; that of Visio 2002 even
worse - quite appalling. (Of course Visio 4.1 doesn't have a "Save as" GIF
filter so I have to go via PSP.

I've been a Visio user, admirer and advocate for years - sad to see an
excellent product heading south.

I have had two instances in our shop on different
computers that required compatibility in Windows XP mode
for Visio 4x

(MS Visio 2002 was
also there but I ripped it out as agricultural crap - very disappointed with

I surely didn't get ripped off. I enjoy 2002 much more
than 2000.

That is not Visio's problem.

My gif saving results in Visio 4 (i use PhotoShop for my
gifs for Visio 4) and 2002 are identical, and turn out
just fine.

Symbol characters in graphic format in my Windows XP
Professional running Visio 2002 and 2003 are flawless.

I have found 2002 improved over 2000. I am thinking that
MS has incorporated the gif filter into a single shared
*.dll filter.

(Of course Visio 4.1 doesn't have a "Save as" GIF
filter so I have to go via PSP.

I am super excited to see the improvements that Visio
2002 has made over 2000 and 4x. I enjoy the integration
of the Project Gantt Charts, 3D maps, individual CAD
objects can now be saved, and so much more! The white
paper alone shows numerous improvements. I hope they keep
up the good work (they did with 2003!)
