Hi Sally, I hate to tell you this but I believe that the
file is unrecoverable, unless you can find it somewhere on
your hard drive as a temp file.
This happened to me a couple of times. It happened once
last year after a power failure. I couldn't open the
file, however, months later (after re-creating the chart )
I had found it on my hard drive. It didn't have any
specific extension to the file but when I double clicked
it opened in Visio and it was there.
I also had a problem last week after working on a project
for a week. I was simply working on the file, the
computer froze and after rebooting i got the error "An
error (100) occurred during the action Open File. Visio
cannot open the file because it's not a Visio file". I was
never able to recover the file and had to recreate it.
Microsoft has a fix for it for SOME INSTANCES. Here's the
link.

In the research that I have done, I have been unable to
find a way to prevent this from happening. The only advise
i got was to backup the file as you are working on it.
It's so frustrating and I know how you feel.
