Visio Footer - File Path

M

Unlike Word and Excel, Visio 2002 does not explicitly allow you to insert the
file path in the footer or header.

Is there some other way that I can insert the file path into the footer for
my document?

Thanks to all for your help.

Dave

H&Fs are different from Word and Excel and were added to address a specific
problem. The normal way of doing what H&Fs do in other programs is to use a
background page.

The reason for adding H&Fs to Visio was because Shapeware received many
requests to add a feature that would add H&Fs when a Visio page printed on
more than one physical page. So if a three page Visio drawing (tabloid size)
printed on a letter size printer, there would be six pages and the H&Fs
would number the pages 1 to 6.

John,

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. I apologize if I am confused, but are
you saying there is no way to add the file path to a header or footer in
Visio?

Dave,

I bow to John's experience on Headers and Footers (& most other things
too!), but an alternative for you might be to add a text shape and then from
the menubar Insert/Field.../Document Info/Directory + plus the same again
but with Filename instead of Directory. You could then place the shape on a
background or foreground page depending on what suits your situation best.

(NB - The above works in Visio 2003, so I'm not certain about 2002)

Hope that helps

Best regards

John (a different one)

Not exactly what you want but it might achieve the required result

Add a blank text box at the required location of your header/footer.
Select the shape
Insert Field and select Document Info. The directory and filename are
available there.

I should have continued. ;-)

With a background page you can place text anywhere on the page (you are not
restricted to the H&F areas). Any of the fields you add to a text block on a
background page use information about the foreground page it is attached to.
So if you use the page name or page number on a background page, the page
name and number are the ones associated with the foreground page the
background page is attached to.

Background pages have worked the same way since Visio 1.0. Headers and
Footers in Visio 3. (I need to add this to the Visio History page) ;-)

If this is a single page document, that would work. If there are multiple
pages, the background page would be easier.
Very true. I keep forgetting about background pages.
