VISIO: how make shapes/stencil window NOT appear on file open? When wxisting
files are opened, the shapes window automatically appears at the left side.
I find no way in Tools, Options to turn that off so that only the document
opens. How?

Try closing all stencils, then close the drawing .vsd
Next time you open the .vsd file the stencils won't open with it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'close all stencils.' I do close all
stencils by closing the entire stencils window (actually window is titled
Shapes)--by cllicking the "x" in the top right corner of it. After doing
that, the drawing covers the whole window, except for the tool bars. I save
it like this, but when next opened, the shapes window is back again.

Interestingly, I have drawing prepared by other people that open without the
shapes window "on" at opening.

These drawings were saved with the Workspace checked.
When you have closed the stencils, try SaveAs and then check that Workspace
is checked in the Save dropdown in the bootom right...

Thanks David for the helpful info.

This works for me:

In Visio Pro 2003:

Open a drawing
Close Shapes window (click "x" or "View" --> "Shapes Window")
Save as new file ("File" --> "Save As...")
Do not save workspace (click arrow on "Save" button --> click to
uncheck "Workspace")
Save and replace the existing file

The Shapes window should not appear the next time you open the file.

Thanks for the lead! Actually, Workspace must be NOT checked for the Shapes
window to not appear on opening! Problem now solved.
