Visio: How to set a transparent background on an inserted GIF?

Inserted a GIF from file with a white background. Would like to edit the
image to make the background transparent so that it will overlay the drawing
background. Is it possible in Visio, or do I have to edit the source file
with another application?

As far as I know it's best to set the background transparency of the
original image in a standard image editor, then re-import the modified
image.
