Visio Pro 2007 - Do PivotDiagrams support general OLE DB for OLAP data sources?

(Originally posted in microsoft.public.visio.general, no answer there)

On the Office Online website, under the topic "Create a PivotDiagram",
the following data source types are listed:

- Excel workbook
- Access database
- Windows SharePoint Services list
- SQL Server database
- SQL Server Analysis Services
- Other OLE DB or ODBC data sources

Could someone from Microsoft or an MVP clarify whether Visio Pro 2007
supports a generic OLE DB for OLAP data source? Meaning, OLAP data
other than Analysis Services? This information will determine whether
I and others in my company purchase the product.

Thanks,
Chuck

Could you be more specific on what you are trying to implement against?
Since it appears that MS is moving to a common set of interfaces with Excel
as the engine, you might be able to test the interfaces with the Excel Pivot
chart rather than Visio. It also would require you to move to a 2007
implementation.
The basic testing that I've done with the Pivot table/chart in Access used a
standard query as input to the process. This leads to the issue that often
we see odbc connect/data definition issues as being implementation problems
by the third party vendor, so maybe your question might be appropriate to
ask of the other party.

I am the third party, actually. I am a software tester for my company
and we produce our own OLE DB for OLAP provider for our OLAP server. I
already test Excel as an OLAP client, and I know I'm going to have to
test the Excel Services component of Office SharePoint Server 2007.
I'm trying to figure out whether I also need to get Visio Pro 2007, to
test its PivotDiagram feature.

So, I'm trying to determine whether Visio will let me connect to my
OLAP provider, or whether it only supports Analysis Services as an
OLAP data source.

I'd respectfully suggest that a vendor that want's to claim that they work
with a different vendors product should test it before letting it out to the
public, whether they want to use it internally or not.

Which simply brings me back to my original question -- Can someone at
Microsoft tell me if Visio Pro 2007 supports non-Analysis Services
OLAP data sources, so that if it doesn't, then I don't have to waste
my money and time on a client that is incompatible with our OLE DB
provider.

Chuck,

we are MVP'S not "at Microsoft" guys.
However from what i have seen VIsio 2007 is NOT an direct OLAP client - but
i am working with some BI guys in Germany on a solution for this.
Doesthis help `?

Senaj,

I think I am just going to have to order a copy and see for myself.
I'll post back here with my results.

Thanks,
Chuck
