Visio Pro 3 Limits?

Is there any implicit limit to the number of shapes and/or sheets in a visio
drawing?

I have a drawing with 12 sheets each of which contains around 400 process
diagram shapes ( each composed of between 3 -10 subshapes) plus all the
piping etc in one drawing so that I can dump out a full parts list for a
process plant, but I am starting to have problems with some of the new shapes
being added.

The new components being added are from the same stencils the original parts
were added from. When I fill in the custom properties for the new shapes, all
is OK, and I can access and read the entered properties, but when I save the
diagram and then re-open it, all the new shapes show an empty custom
properties box, even though a label generated from data entered into the
custom properties fields is still displayed on the part.

If I open a new single drawing, the shapes behave normally; if I add 2 or 3
additional sheets, all is still OK.n Indicating that the problem is not with
the shape stencils, but with the drawing itself.

Another symptom of the problem :

Originally, if I placed a new shape, modified the custom properties, copied
and pasted it, the new shape always retained the data in the custom
properties fields intact. Now, on the large sheet, CPs are always blank on
the pasted shape.

Also, all of the formulae contained in the custom properties section of the
shapesheet for the pasted symbol are replaced with "Ref()", but are still
intact on the shape it was copied from.

I have made quite a few mods to the diagram since combining the original
seperate sheets, and would like to avoid having to go back and modify the
original drawings to reflect the new status.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There to my knowledge no limit of number of shape in a drawing. But when you
reach about 30 000 shapes in a page, the refresh begins to be long .

You problem could be because the properties of you shape have a reference to
other of you drawing. So when you paste to other drawing the reference
becomes incorrect.

You can also look to your stencil document to see if the original shapes
have not been modified by a user. Because if so, the shape dragged from the
original stencil will match thes difference.

Thanks for the response Michel.

It would appear that you are correct in that I haven't hit any limit yet.

After many hours trying different things, I have trace the problem to a
corrupted copy of a Custom Properties definition stored in one of the
drawings added to the set. If I load in the original custom properties set
(renamed to something different), I can apply the original copy of the CP set
over the corrupted one in the drawing, and the shape thus treated behaves
normally.

I am in the process of trying to track down all of the components that have
inherited the faulty structure from the corrupted CP set and over-write them
with the original CP set without losing all the data in each symbol.

I am fairly hopeful that I can do this, but am still working on it....
Looks like it may be a long Easter... I hope your Easter is a little better!

Thanks again.
