Visio should let me replace an existing shape with a new shape

It should be a very easy task to replace a shape of one type in an existing
Visio drawing with a different shape. This should maintain existing line
connections and shape text. This should work with any shapes in the same
template and probably with any shape. If this function exists then the help
system has a major failing in it. This should be part of the "working with
shapes topic". The inability to do this is either a MAJOR failing with Visio
or with Visio help. At this moment I miss ABC flow charter. This was drag
and drop there…

You can do that in exporting the file in XML format (*.vdx) change the name
of the master in the file and reload it. Of course you can automate this
with little code. You can also develop this function with cut and paste as
the XML visio format is supported by the clipboard.

Hi Erik,
The problem is actually much more complex than you realize unless one
ignores most of the variables in possible shape configurations. We have a
utility called Search & Replace
http://www.shapesource.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=115 that handles
most conditions although not all. The UI tries to handle as many conditions
as possible so it's not a simple "replace A with B" dialog. You can try it
for free before you decide whether to buy. We specialize in Visio
development.

Regards,
Brett
