Visio Web Shapes

Robert Schilt

I have recently upgraded to Visio 2003 Professional. Since
upgrading to Visio 2003 I am no longer able to search for
manufacturer specific shapes. Search options are set to
search the internet but all searches only return local
shapes.
Is anyone able to shed any light on this ?

Hi Robert,

It would help to know if you are not seeing search results for any shape
search, or only when you search for manufacturer specific shapes. What are
your results when you turn off the local search (via Tools>Options>the Shape
Search tab) and then search for something like "circle"?

If the bad results are limited to these manufacturer specific shapes, what
are the shape names and keywords that you are searching for? thanks.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for your response.
I just tried what you suggested and when I turn off the
local search and do a search on "circle" it returns a list
of various circles.

If I then do a search on say "Cisco" it returns an empty
list.

Cheers.

Hi Robert,

It sounds like the manufacturer specific shapes you are searching for are
part of the Visio Enterprise Network Tools Product which was discontinued in
the Visio 2002 timeframe. If this is the case, this would explain why these
shapes are not being returned when you search for them within Visio 2003.
There are more details in the following KB article:

Dick,

Although I am not happy with the fact that this feature
has been discontinued, I do appreciate your prompt
response and pointing me to the article with explanation.
Do you know if Microsoft intend to release a similar
product in the near future ?

Hi Robert,

I don't know of any information on a future release. The additional
information in the FAQ might be helpful:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/visio/networkcenter/ventfaq.mspx You can
also provide your feedback through the MS Wish link on the site.

You might also want to search and monitor Microsoft's enterprise or network
developer plans. I don't know of any specific planning in this area, but
with all the information and planning going in the Whidbey and Longhorn
timeframe (and available for review on MSDN and microsoft.com) there might
be something that suits your requirements, and/or that you can provide
customer input on. thanks.
