Vision 2002 diagrams pasted into Word 2002 cause bloated word file

We're having a problem with relatively simple Visio diagrams. We create
them in Visio 2002 and copy / paste them into Word 2002. Even one such
simple diagram causes the Word file size to grow by 10 - 20 Mbytes! This
despite the fact that the entire Visio file itself, including several
diagrams, is much smaller than that. The diagrams contain only text and
simple shapes w/ solid fill patterns. There's no fundamental reason why they
should bloat the Word file so much.

Has anyone else seen this Word bloat problem?

Does anyone have a workaround that preserves the quality of the Visio
diagrams (i.e. using JPEGs is not suitable)?

Thanks.

Not sure of bloat, but a smaller file size results when the Visio drawing is
copied to clipboard, then Paste Special - Picture, rather than plain Paste.
However, this loses the OLE properties, so that double-click on the graphic
in Word will NOT invoke Visio for editing. I don't find this a problem,
since the recipients of my Word documents don't have Visio anyway.
