Viso Master Modification

S

Simon Taylor

If i understand the documentation correctly i should be able to create a
master, create shapes from it, modify the master and have the shapes reflect
the updates to the master.

Visio 2003 Std or Ent Sp2.

File/ Open Stencil
Edit Master
Make a mod to the Master
Save
I get message --> "Modifications made to a master open in a window will not
be saved. Close the window and re-save the drawing to record the
modifications".

I get this message whether i have a drawing open which references the master
or whether i just have the stencil open editing the master.

Either i dont understand how this is meant to work or it isnt or im doign
something wrong.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Simon

Hi Simon,

You get that error message when the Master edit window is still open. That's
the one with the green background. Visio is in a weird state when you have a
master open for editing. Let's just say it's not a good time to Save...

You've got to "push" your changes out to the document by closing the master
window (clicking "yes, I want all instances to be modified")

Your instances will be updated, and you can now save your document without
being harrassed.

So if i add some text to the master in the green-backed window then close the
window "Update name of Master" it should push the change back to the document
that holds all the copies of the master.

It isnt making any changes to the shapes on the doc.
Ive added a box to the master and closed the master window and the box isnt
pushed to the shapes made from the master.

How do i know whether the shapes on the doc are linked to the master?

I believe you need to make changes to the master on the Document Stencil,
not the stencil from which the master came, in order to have the instances
in the drawing reflect your changes. After the Document Stencil master has
been updated, you can copy it into your source stencil.
