Vista Word 2007 update fails to install

Greg

I keep trying and trying to install this update but it fails every time,
returning no error message other than "failed" and the ubiquitous code 57A
that takes you into the typical MS loop of useless so called help that ends
up eating its tail.

I have the OSE startup type set to manual it is not that.

Other updates install just fine. It is just this one that fails.

I have Vista Home Premium running on a Core Duo laptop, Word 2007
(12.0.6015.5000) with Office 2007 (12.0.6017.5000).

Any help appreciated. I have already posted this to the Vista group without
success.

Have you run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics tool to see if it can find a
problem with the current non-SP installation? It is under Word Options,
Resources tab.

Thanks for that suggestion. It didn't help. Under the first diagnostic test
it said "some solutions" were available but, as I suspected that did not
mean anything. In the end, all I got was this page:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/diagnostichelp.aspx which says "none
of the Microsoft Office Diagnostics found any problems" (unlike the message
at the end of the test results, which admitted there was a problem but that
it could not be fixed!).

I must say this is just so typical of Microsoft products. I have a simple
problem - a particular update refuses to install. There must be a way to
know why this is so, whether it matters, whether it will be corrected by the
next update anyway, or whether I should just hide it indefinitely and forget
about it.

All problems with servicepacks or patches are supported free of charge: I
recommend that you call Microsoft and log this as an update bug and it
should get resolved by a Microsoft Engineer.
