Im not sure if im doing something wrong here, but when i write a new
word document in vista and then try open it in an xp machine, it is
not recognising the file type!!! does this mean that vista word is not
compatible with xp word?

The OS (Vista/XP) makes no difference. What does make a difference is the
Office version so if you are running Office 2007 on your Vista machine and
an earlier version on your XP machine you could find this.

You can either save your documents in Word 2007/Vista as "Word 97-2003
format" (.doc) or get the compatibility pack (see
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx) to enable
you to read Word 2007 formats (.docx , .docm) in earlier versions.
