visual basic error when launching Word

Magdalena Rood

Without making any changes to my system, Word has suddenly started
looking for Visual Basic for Application while launching. Everything
kind of stops, until the error message shows and then the computer goes
back to normal. The error message is this:

"Can't load Visual Basic for Applications. Make sure Visual Basic for
Applications is installed on your computer. If Visual Basic for
Applicatins is installed, make sure the path to the installation folder
does not contain any characters outside of the system code page....and
contains fewer than 255 characters."

I'm on a PowerBook G4, using Mac OS 10.3.7. I've got a basic
installation of MS Office 2004, version 11.1. I've run Virex which
claims my system is clean. I'm a one-person office, without IT support.

A while back I contacted support about this issue, received a
confirmation but never heard anything else. I don't want to use another
of my free supports chances to ask why I never received anything to my
first question. Help, guidance, and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, --Magdalena

The $64,000 question is "Well, have you got it?" Look in the Office
subfolder of /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004. Do you see a Visual Basic
for Applications file there?

Actually, whether you do or whether you don't, you'd better reinstall. Use
the Office Remover in Additional Tools subfolder of /Applications/Microsoft
Office 2004 to remove Office 2004. (Don't worry, it won't touch your data.)
Then reinstall it from the Office 2004 CD. Then launch Microsoft AutoUpdater
or go to Help/Check for Updates in Word. Update to SP 2 (11.2).

Now how's it working?

Can't believe that I forgot to mention that Visual Basic for
Applications was in the right place. But oh, well... the fix was a
reinstall. Word is opening without apparent problem now. Thank you for
the good advice. --Magdalena
