Visual Source Safe and Access 2003 SP2 ADP

Clayton

Hi All

I cannot get VSS 6.0 to work with Access 2003 SP2 when using an ADP. I
have installed the utility and have the Source Safe items in my menu. I
select Add Database and after my CPU whirls and chirls for a few
seconds, I am given the standard VSS dialog asking me where I want to
put my project.

Unfortunately, that is where it stops. I check later and found that th
new project was created in VSS.

Has any one else had problems (or success) doing this? Is this only for
MDBs? Am I simply really incompetent??

Thanks much in advance.

You do have to download and install the VSS add in for a2003.

I assume you done the above. I would then test it on a standard mdb.

I don't know if the VSS add in works for a adp project.....

So, does VSS work on a standard mdb you create?

Hi Albert

Thanks much for the reply. Sadly no...VSS does not seem to work at all
regardless of it being an MDB or ADP.

I have indeed installed the VSS Add-In. I have also tried it with the
database in both 2000 and 2003 format, after restarting my machine and
using general overall profanity.

Its seems like it should be a brain-dead simple procedure to accomplish
this. The instructions are all pretty much point and click so I have
difficultly believing its me. Today, I noticed that I'm having problems
with my other Add-Ins not 'sticking' after I install them. Maybe there
is just a deeper problem with my install of Office. I think the next
step will be to reinstall all of Office 2003 and see if that fixes the
issue.

I'll post a reply and let you know if that does the trick or not.

Hi Again Albert

I have tried this again on a completely different computer with
entirely different databases (3 actually...2 MDB and 1 ADP). VSS does
the same thing on all of them. I always get asked where I want to put
the VSS project and that is the end of the story. Very sad...this is an
excellent idea that is, at least from my point of view, a total waste
of time. I'm thinking the problem is with SP2 but I'm certainly not
going to invest anymore time in this and, for anyone else reading this
message, I suggest you do the same.

Thanks!

One of the other computers in the office still had Access 2003 with no
SPs on it at all. I tried VSS there and, unsuprisingly...it didn't work
there either.

dont ever ever ever install access 2003 on the same machine as access
2000. it is like playing russian roulette.

MICROSOFT DOESNT TAKE ACCESS SERIOUSLY ENOUGH TO TEST INTRA-VERSION
HELL.

format your machine; dont horse around; see if it works. and then talk
to us.

I have no idea why you are having problems. I am running a fully patched
version of windows, and also office 2003 for that matter.

I downloaded the VSS add in for ms-access, and visual source safe works just
fine.

I am running ms-access with sp2 for office installed, and of course
windows...fully patched to sp2 also..

I am running VSS 6.0

here is some screen shots...and note how the ms-access UI is extended with
little check boxes...and "locks" for objects that have been checked out by
me...

That's interesting. I've been running four or five versions of Access on the same
system for years.

that doesn't mean that you dont have headaches
that doesn't mean that you dont have troubles

just because you've done it? it doesn't mean it is practical

for starters; how do you manage opening a database in a particular
version of Access?
sendTo, different Extensions, open with?

Windows is just inherently not capable of handling tasks like this.

and I dont trust Windows enough to mix and match crap like this.

MDB is a joke.. Maybe instead of worrying about having 5 different
flavors of MDB on your plate; you should get off your FAT ASS and learn
to use Access Data Projects.

I forgot that part.

ACCVER - Allows you to work with multiple versions of MS Access
databases. Detects the version of Access used to create your MDB, MDE
or MDA files and either reports the version number or starts the
appropriate version of MS Access. http://www.aylott.com.au/accver.htm

Rubbish.

Move to Linux.

What worry. It works well.

works well?

for you on one machine, it works well?

i've had a hell of a time with it; i mean.. what happens when you run a
'detect and repair' in 2002-- won't it just blatantly hose 2003?
i just think that playing Canadian Roulette is too dangerous; in the
day and age of virtual machines???

absolutely unnecessary

VMware Virtual SERVER is even FREE.

if i dont trust MICROSOFT do you think that im going to trust Tonys'
scripts, or Larrys' Scripts.. or some cheesy URL from Australia?

I mean seriously here.. do you actually download scripts and other
crap?
No wonder... you guys dont have any clue how dangerous this world is;
you guys are sitting behind a superpower; not understanding how complex
and dangerous this world is.
You take security for granted.

you're a friggin canuck...
they don't even teach you guys how to READ north of the border, do
they??

I mean; where did you learn to read; off of American soap operas??

Do you know what I think America should do with Canada?

I think that we should invade the shit out of your country and set the
Quebecis free.
They have lived under your British-esque tyranny for too long. You
can't just peacefully secede from the UK.. because you guys have never
made a STATEMENT TO THE WORLD.

Live free or die tying, kid.

And yes, I am dead serious, bro.

(technically, I'm not that serious.. i just had an American teacher in
the 10th grade; and i wanted to write a paper on 'why America should
invade Canada' and he wouldn't let me. And I'm still fighting friggin
mad about it; 20 years later. i should be able to write about
WHATEVER in the hell i want to write about; my granddaddy was out
fighting for my freedom of speech-- meanwhile your granddaddy was out
dodging drafts.. )

meanwhile you Canucks are sitting around betraying the United States
and breathing socialist hubbub. I mean.. Socialized Healthcare?? NOT
IN MY HEMISPHERE, COMMIE!!!)

I would _LOVE_ to keep a copy of Access 2000 on my main desktop. It
has some features in ADP that I _LOVE_ compared to 2002 and 2003.

likewise, I would love to sleep with hookers and drink whiskey every
day.
I would love to do that.
And if you can't admit that, then you're not being honest with
yourself.

I would love to eat double-cheeseburgers for lunch; and huge ice cream
sundaes for lunch every day.

Do i do it?

NO.

Why?

Because it is dangerous. Uneccessary risks. I dont want to be mugged
or diseased by a hooker.
And I dont want to be a fat canuck when I grow up.

Are (some) hookers beautiful, and would it be a lot of fun?

YES.

Do i do it? NO.

All about minimizing unnecessary risks.

If you have clients that are still using an old version of Access?
Tell them to shove it or upgrade.

<B>I mean, the JPG vulnerability; are there even patches out there for
Acc97, let alone Acc2000 or Access 2.0?</B>

You are supporting the vilest of the criminal cartels by allowing your
clients to continue to use unpatchable systems.
You are single-handedly responsible for botnets and your naive
carelessness is the reason the internet is inherently insecure.

So; what-- you're just chilling with a product that is 100% insecure?
Anyone with Access 97, 2.0 or even 2000? You shouldn't be ALLOWED to
browse the internet; as your software is inherently insecure.

You are a danger to society; a danger to the internet.

And I wish a thousand worms and viruses upon you and your silly
country..

It's all about minimizing unnecessary risks.

It's all about having a simple, stable development environment.

That is WHY i use Access; because it is a simple, stable environment..
and the client is installed and supported by MICROSOFT.

If i wanted to play in DLL HELL i would go and write VB.

I think that your ignorant advice is dangerous and that you; and all
other MVPs are a bunch of MDB sissies.
Eat shit and go get a real database, kid.

And keep your software patched for christ sakes.
Using obsolete, unsupported software?

It just isn't an option.

The fate of the free world depends on it.
