Visual tear when scrolling

Processor: Power PC

Someone posted an earlier thread on this topic:

but it is now closed, and wasn't resolved, and I didn't find any other follow-up. I am frequently encountering garbled text as I scroll down a page in word draft view (especially when clicking with the mouse on the little scroll buttons on the left of the screen). This brings back bad old memories from problems with older versions of Word that I hadn't run into with Word X or 2004. To get back to work I have to do some more scrolling to get the machine to reset the screen. Annoying.

I'm using an older laptop (1.33 GHz PowerPC, with 1 GB of SDRAM), if that helps any (or you think it is hurting me). I'm using the 12.1.1 update.

Thanks for any help,

Hi David -

The limited amount of RAM is certainly not helping and may be the actual
cause. It could also be at least partly attributable to the video
limitations of the system.

I believe there were similar reports when 2008 first came out, but AFAIK it
was resolved quite quickly. Does it help to work in Draft view?

I experience the same tearing on a daily basis, using a MacBook pro with a dedicated video card and 2GB of RAM. Surely my system is sufficient for scrolling text in a window?

It occurs in Draft View, but not in Page Layout View - and since the latter would seem to be more demanding, it seems like a clear bug to me.

As do others, I have 2 GB of RAM and it happens to me too, even when it's the
first and only app running after boot.

Whereas it doesn't happen -- at all -- on my weenie little MacBook :)

I suspect that it's a graphics card driver issue. It might pay to check
around and see if there is an updated driver for the video card.

Cheers

.... There are also a number of firmware, keyboard & other updates
specifically for MBPs which do *not* get picked up by Software Update. It
might be a good idea to have a look & apply any that you may have missed -
they've resolved a number of similar issues for me... I was on the verge of
sending mine back until I found these fixes :)

I have been having the same problem in normal or page layout view, and it only happens when I scroll with the touchpad or mouse. If I use the scroll bar/ buttons in Word, it always works beautifully.
To me, it looks like text is overlapping - and if I place my cursor somewhere and start typing in the affected area, it ends up somewhere completely different in the 'real' document than where it appears to be on the screen.
I'm also using a MBP w/ 2GB RAM, and I've got the latest Leopard & Office 2008 updates.
This is really an annoying issue, as it means I can't use touchpad scrolling.

And it only happens in Word, so I don't think it's a system issue.

Use Help>Send Feedback to send your report in to Microsoft. They won't see
it here.

I think it's a graphics driver issue because your system has an independent
graphics card, mine doesn't... But you could be right.

The more reports they get, the more information they have to work on and the
sooner they will get around to looking into the issue.

Cheers
