vlookup, hlookup etc

I'm struggling to get my head round these two functions. Does anyone know of
a good resource that explains how and why I can use these functions - they
look poweful, but I can't fathom it from help

In Excel Help.

VLOOKUP() is more usually used. Looks for a value in a column an
returns data from adjoining columns to the right in the same row.

HLOOKUP() looks up across a row and returns data from rows underneat
in the same column
