VLOOPUP extremely slow

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have a spreadsheet w/ roughly 18,000 vlookups to a separate sheet in the same workbook (converting Zip Codes to MSA's). There are no other significant calculations on the sheet (a few text commands that take no time to recalc).

The recalc takes almost 10 minutes. That seems very long. The same recalc in Office 2003 under vmWare Fusion with XP Home only requires about a minute.
