VPN Connection to Outlook

Hi - I'm using a company laptop that is connected to our domain and I want to
access my mailbox using outlook on the laptop when I'm offsite. When
connected on our lan I log in and everything works fine. When I'm offsite I
log in using my profile and my DSL account at home and launch my cisco vpn
client. It connects fine but it wont' access network shares or my exchange
server. The network shares I figured out my mapping the IP (ex.
192.168.1.1\c$\Share_directory). What do I need so I can access exchange.
When I try and access it says network not found and when I try to configure
it doens't seem to be able to resolve the server address. Any ideas?

Problems resolving a server address are from malfunctioning or misconfigured
DNS.

Check that your VPN client is configured to use your company's internal DNS
servers.

As a last resort or for a temporary fix, you could add an entry in your
laptop's HOSTS file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) for the Exchange
server.

Why is adding the entry to the host file a last resort - I gave it a try and
it works fine.

I don't see that as a last resort, personally. I would not hand out a laptop
to a travelling user in my organization without making the necessary entries
into the hosts file.
