VSD to WMF Conversion

I've been tasked to put together a manual and have been provided with
numerous viso drawings. I don't have visio and would like to convert the
drawing to wmf for inclusion in the manual (using Word). Is a standalone tool
available to perform this?

You need Visio to save the diagrams in WMF format. Ask whoever
provided the diagrams to do the SaveAs for you.

Unfortunately is not quite as easy as it sounds. By way of example, I use DWG
Trueview for working with Autocad files...is there a similarly featured
viewer or utility for Visio?

There is a viewer but that is all it is basically, just a viewer.
Other than that only Visio can open Visio files. Depending upon how
many diagrams you have and how many pages it may be worth getting the
files converted by a 3rd party. It would probably not cost very much
as it can be made into an automated process.
