vti_cnf file has duplicated itself - why? can I fix?

I am running FrontPage 2000 and I maintain 2 different websites.

This morning, the _vti_cnf file has started showing up in dang near every
file folder I have on my computer! A closer look shows that it is in each
folder I have opened today...we are talking bout 65 different places at least.

I've given it much thought and the only thing i can figure that I have done
different is this: This morning I was making changes to a specific page on
both sites. I had placed a photo on the page in the first page, and rather
than copy and pasting the photo into the image folder of the 2nd website, I
copy & pasted the photo straight from one page to another.

Could this have been the cause of such a sudden overpopulation of the
_vti_cnf file? Is it safe to delete this file from all other files that are
not associated with either website?

Also, it might be important to note that each _vti_cnf file has different
files in them - it seems to have gathered random copies of items within the
folder it is in. (If that makes sense)

Hmmm...sounds like the time I inadvertantly turned My Documents into a
website...not a good thing.

Every folder in your website will have a _vti_cnf folder.
This normal.
Leave them alone.

in the C:\Documents and Settings\Jenn .... then they have their own folders.
Is this similar to "my documents" ?

I understand this, however I now have a _vti_cnf folder in every other folder
of my computer - not in my website folder alone.

It sounds as if you did something that converted your c file to web files
(other people have done this). Unfortunately, I don't remember the fix.

As Tom Pepper said, sounds like you have converted your c drive to a web
site.

First, copy the folders containing your real websites to another
location, such as a memory stick - the following steps will completely
disrupt these folders. If they are in My Documents\My Webs then copy
the whole of the My Webs folder.

Now in Windows Explorer search for folder and file names containing
_vti*
Click the Search toolbar button. If Windows Desktop Search opens, then
click the link at the bottom for Search Companion.

In the box labelled "All or part of the name" type in _vti*

In the "Look in" dropdown ensure C: is selected (assuming no other
drives are affected). DO NOT select the memory stick or drive where you
copied the websites.

Click More Advanced Options
Tick the boxes:
Search System folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search Subfolders

Click Search
This will find every _vti_cnf folder (and others) on the hard drive.
When the search completes, delete the lot (which is why your webs should
be copied to another location.) If you are careful you can avoid
deleting the folders from your websites, sorting by "In Folder" column
will help with this. But make the backup anyway.

Copy the saved websites back to their original location, and open them
in FrontPage.
