vti_cnf folders

Some time ago, the above folders seemed to create themselves within my existing folders and in these vti_cnf folders are copies of the documents in the "parent" folder. How did this happen? Is it harmful? Can I delete them? What does it mean? This has occurred within most of the folders i(and sub-folders) n my My Documents folder.

Folders with these names (except they are prefixed with an underscore,
e.g. _vti_cnf) are created by Microsoft Front Page as subfolders to web
sites. They hold information for Front Page "about" the construction of
the site. Are you using, or used previously, FrontPage? Or,did you get
copies of web sites from someone?

If not, I don't know. I don't think that _vti_cnf are any sort of
standard for other programs, but maybe they are.

Thanks Rob. I am using FrontPage, and it occurs to be that this only happened once I started using FrontPage. However, the folders in which these sub-folders have been created have got nothing to do with anything regarding web pages. For example, I might have a folder called Letters, with a number of documents. Now, in Letters, I have a sub-folder called _vti_cnf and copies of all my documents are in there. The Letter folder has never been used in regard to my use of FrontPage. I find it quite weird! Do you think I can safely delete all these - I am sure it is taking up valuable space!
