W 2000 shutdown puzzle

New hope for an explanation, in this active group
My win 98 often freezes at shutdown, needs to cut current.
I know there is a ms cure for this, but experienced trouble trying this out
on an earlier pc.
However, if I leave Word 2000 with something to do (save unfinished doc at
shutdown), win 98 closes OK normally.
Is there a rational explanation for this?
