W2000 master doc

I am working with 7 or 8 smaller docs and creating 1 large master doc
(company directory). After I insert all the sub-documents and the TOC on
the master, page numbering works great until about the 6 or 7 doc. It
starts re-numberting. Total pages are roughly 85. I am at a loss of what
to do. Have tried splitting the the troublesome document into several
pieces and I still have the problem. I would appreciate any input anyone
may have.

Thanks in advance...Rick

First of all, don't use master documents. They are unreliable and prone to
corruption in several imaginative ways. See this article for all the gory
details.

If you think your documents might already have been corrupted, this article
shows you how to get out of the jam.

If you want to have continuous page numbering and a consolidated table of
contents without using master documents, take a look here

Alternatively, if there are only 85 pages in total, and the document
formattying is consistent between all of them, you might consider just
putting them all into a single Word file.

Will using Word XP or 2003 fix the problem with master doc.?

Unfortunately not. There have been reports of exactly the asame problems
experienced by users of both those versions of Word.

G'day "RMP" <[email protected]>,

For instructions on using Master Documents successfully see my article
at

I would Maggie all your subs before embarking on the change of
process: copy'n'paste all bar the last para mark in each doc to a new
doc.

For the particular problem you have, you need to ensure the section
properties in the Master are set correctly, and do likewise from just
the sub as well.
