W2002, XP, Main Cannot Find Data

If I create a mailmerge main document merged with an
Excel source and save a close the main document, when I
reopen the main document I get "Mail Merge Main Document
Cannot Find Data Source". The Excel document is not open
separately. This will happen with no intervening
actions. It's erratic, some documents are OK, others
fail. The only reason I can think of is a limit on the
length of the path describing the data source - is there
a limit? Where is it documented? Why no warning?
