WAB32.dll and vCards

T

theredmenace

When attempting to open a vCard received as an email attachment the following
error comes up "The required component is missing: WAB32.dll. Please install
Microsoft Outlook Again. The specified module could not be found."

I just had to reinstall Office XP Pro due to some accidental program file
deletions. Sometime during the process Outlook Express was installed and then
Outlook XP re-installed. Things are fine except when getting a vCard with an
email attachment. Have not been able to open a vCard since the reinstall.

Reinstalling Outlook does not seem to fix the problem. Can I reinstall
WAB32.dll manually? If so, were can I find it and where do I put it?

Specify the file association for VCF files that has been designated for your
OS.

The file association for this ACT! vCard (.vcf) is Outlook (XP PRO). I double
checked it with the Open With diaglog and that seems to be in order. however,
it still generates the same WAB32.dll missing error

What do you mean "this Act! vcard?"
Do you have a functioning installation of Outlook Express on your system?

Does your file association for VCF look like this?
"<drive>:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\OFFICE10\OUTLOOK.EXE" /v "%1"

VCF files still require a functional installation of the Windows Address
Book, which may have been corrupted when you reinstalled Outlook Express.
You might try renaming and WAB32.DLL and reinstalling OE.

Sorry to confuse...

Yes, I've a functioning, legal version of Outlook, with all recent updates,
installed as with the rest of the Office XP Professional suite. My OS is XP
Pro, running Service Pack 2.

The vCards are something friends routinely send as email attachments. Until
my recent problems, I have always simply been able to open them up and add
them to my address book.

Since RE-installing Outlook, when I try to open any vCard, I get this
"wab32.dll missing" error. Re-Re installing Outlook has not resolved the
issue.

The "ACT! vCard.vcf" reference refers only to what the file attachments I
receive are called when I save them to my c:drive.

I did not say to reinstall Outlook. That wouldn't solve anything.
I said to reinstall Outlook Express. That's how you repair the WAB.

You were correct, there was NOT a functioning version of Outlook Express. I
reinstalled it.

Once OE is installed, trying to access the Address Book from within OE
generates an error and suggests reinstalling OE. I did, to no avail. So you
seem to have put me on the right path. Thanks.

However, as far as renaming WAB32.dill goes, I'm stuck at square 1.
WAB32.dll is not in the /Program Files/Outlook Express directory.

A search of the c: drive (with show hidden files and Show protected system
files options in use) does show it in a few places, but I don't know which I
should be using.

Any advice on where it should be?
