In the last few weeks, I have had difficulty opening Office software.
Whenever i click on an application, windows installer opens up, and then
requests that i insert the disc to add the software. Entering the CD never
solves the problem. It can't find what it needs. Eventually, I can get word
or powerpoint to open up, but it takes a few minutes each time.

Should I reinstall the whole disc and start from the begining

Windows XP Home; 1.79 Ghz and 1 gb ram; have had office installed since 2003

Peter: Thanks for replying. I am not sure I understand the post. I got from
it that I should remove the configurations from windows installer and then
reinstall the software. Is that correct?

Depends. What is it trying to install. That is what needs to be removed with the Windows Installer Clean Up utility.
If it is the Office itself then the answer is yes. If not then no
