Waiting for Excel to accept DDE Commands

Using Office 97 and have just installed XP SP2. When trying to open a mail
merge document word hangs, the status bar displays "Waiting for Excel to
Accept DDE Command" and word stops responding and has to be closed with "end
task now".

Is Office 97 compatible with XP SP2?
