Want table borders to default to no borders

Some versions of Word ago, I knew how to get a blank document to default to tables with no borders i.e. when I set up a table, it will have no lines (I don't mean gridlines, I know how to turn those on & off) unless I set them up in "Borders." I can't work out how to do this (now using Word in Office Small Biz 2003). I'm sure it's breathtakingly simple & I'll go, "Duh!" when one of you tells me how to do this!

You have to select TableNormal as your default table AutoFormat in Table |
Table AutoFormat. I think just selecting it and clicking the Default...
button will do this, but it may be that you have to actually open Normal.dot
and do it.

Modify the Table Grid style. Display the Styles and Formatting Pane. Click
on the right edge of th Table Grid sytle name and when the dropdown appears,
click modify then format borders and shading. Select None as the border
style then OK. Finally check "Add to template"

Suzanne Barnhill's suggestion to apply an existing built in table style and
make is the default is a better answer.

anything to Normal.dot; just clicking the Default button seems to have
done the trick.

This ability was added in Word 2000, but I didn't think it had a Table
Normal style (i.e., anything without some kind of borders, shading, or other
fancy formatting). In Word 2002, you can not only select your favorite Table
AutoFormat, you can also define a table style and make it your default (it
gets added to the list to choose from).

My mistake. What I actually did was chose the autoformat option,
select style "Simple 1", uncheck the "borders" box, and tell Word to set
this as the default for new tables.

Sorry for the confusion. But that certainly seems to work in Word 2000
to produce a default table with no borders, shading or anything else.
