want to import a .pst file,error says file not pst

i exported my outlook settings to a pst file as i intended to do a complete
overhaul of my system, on reinstalling XP and office i tried to import the
..pst file and keep getting an error message that says the file is not
recognized as a .pst file.

Exporting is not the correct way to transfer Outlook data. It is too easy to
lose or corrupt your data when you do.
Explain in detail how you created and transferred this file.
If you placed it on storage medium, ensure you have moved it back to your
hard drive and removed its read only attribute.
